A skylight in an Austin patio or porch cover is an opening in a structure that was often built as shade, not as a house roof. Water that gets through still matters. It just does not land in a living-room well. Drainage, the cover’s framing, and what the HOA will allow are the job. Do not copy a kitchen-skylight plan onto a patio cover.
Cover versus house roof
House skylights sit on a conditioned building. They need a well, interior finishes, and Climate Zone 2 ratings when they are glass units in Austin city lots: U-factor 0.60 and SHGC 0.28. Confirm those tables and the sheet.
A patio cover may be attached, detached, metal, wood, or insulated. Some west-side houses have a solid porch roof that is already a low-slope membrane. That is closer to flat roof skylights and drainage. Some covers are open-beam with a later solid skin. Cutting a unit into a skin that cannot take a curb is how a shade structure leaks onto the furniture.
A screened porch is still outdoor space. A sunroom that was closed in later may now be conditioned. If it is conditioned, treat it as a house roof until the independent installer says otherwise.
Heat, hail, and HOA
A west-facing patio in Bee Cave or a south cover in Kyle will put a hard beam on the table. Shades on an outdoor unit have to survive weather. Indoor motorized kits are not automatically outdoor kits. Check the sheet.
Hail still hits. The September 24, 2023 storm was the costliest Austin-area hailstorm on record, about $600 million in estimated Travis and Williamson losses, with hail up to about 4 inches in Round Rock. Acrylic in a cover and glass in a cover fail differently. Acrylic versus glass applies.
HOAs in Circle C, Steiner Ranch, and similar neighborhoods review roof changes, and a patio cover is often more visible from the greenbelt than a back-slope house skylight. Ask what they review.
Permits follow the lot. A cover in Austin, an ETJ, Cedar Park, or Leander is not one rule. Cedar Park and Leander are separate desks. Confirm whether the cover itself was permitted before you add an opening to it.
A price, a “waterproof patio skylight” guarantee, and a same-day cover install are not on this site.
How Bright Sky ATX fits
We match you with experienced, insured independent skylight professionals. The pro you hire inspects the cover and, if it can take a unit, installs. We do not. See skylight installation and flat roof skylights.
