Solar tube dome replacement is the job after you already know the roof piece failed. The tube in the attic can still be straight. The diffuser can still be clear. The acrylic on the shingles is cracked, clouded, or missing. Solar tube repair in Austin names the failed part. This page is the swap once the dome is the part.

Solar-tube dome on an Austin shingle roof flashing kit

What has to match

Diameter and the flashing boot. A dome from a different kit that “almost sits” is a leak. The independent installer should read the label on the tube or the old dome, then order that kit or a documented successor.

Roof type. Shingle in Hutto is not standing-seam in Dripping Springs. A new dome on the wrong pan will fail in wind-driven rain even if the acrylic is new.

Hail rating, as published on the current sheet. The September 24, 2023 storm was the costliest Austin-area hailstorm on record, about $600 million in estimated Travis and Williamson losses, with hail up to about 4 inches in Round Rock. Do not copy a national impact number that is not on the sheet.

If the kit is discontinued and no successor dome exists, you are in a full-unit conversation. That is still not a framed skylight unless the room wants a window. Round versus tube stops that mix-up.

Austin UV finishes a cloudy dome even without a crack. South and west roofs in Pflugerville and Round Rock take more sun than a north dome on the same house. Photograph the old part from the roof, including any stamp on the plastic, before it leaves the site. A hardware-store “universal” dome that does not match the boot is a second leak.

What is not a dome-only job

Water at the ceiling ring timed with rain can be flashing, a joint, or the dome. If the attic tube is kinked or full of debris, a new dome will not restore the light. Bugs in a solar tube is the insect path. A long offset with too many elbows is a layout problem. Long attic run stays on that.

Interior caulk around the diffuser is not a dome replacement. It is a way to hide a roof leak.

City of Austin Climate Zone 2 maxima (U-factor 0.60, SHGC 0.28) are skylight numbers. Matching tube figures were not confirmed in those tables. Confirm the replacement dome on the product sheet.

A price for a dome kit could not be confirmed here. Access, roof type, and whether the boot comes off change the quote.
