Solar tube repair in Austin is work on a unit that is already in the roof. The usual failures are a cracked or clouded dome, flashing that no longer sheds, or a joint in the attic that lets dust, bugs, or water into the tube. A full replacement is a different decision. Start by naming the failed part.
Do solar tubes leak is the diagnostic sibling. This page is the repair path after you already know the tube is the object.
Dome, flashing, or tube
The dome is the roof piece. Acrylic can crack in hail, cloud under UV, or sit slightly off the flashing after a storm. The September 24, 2023 Central Texas hailstorm was the costliest Austin-area hailstorm on record. Round Rock saw hail up to about 4 inches. A dome that took that hit can fail even when the ceiling diffuser still looks fine.
Flashing is the kit that meets shingle, metal, or tile. Wrong kit, aged seal, or a later reroof that was not woven back to the boot will leak at the penetration. Interior caulk at the diffuser does not fix that.
The tube is the reflective run. Joints can open. Insulation can sag onto a flex run and kink it. Bugs can nest at a gap. Light then drops and the diffuser looks dirty even after you wipe it. A long offset run has more joints. See solar tube on a long attic run.
Condensation on the dome interior in humid weather is not automatically a defect. Persistent drip at the ceiling ring, timed with rain, is.
What a repair visit should include
Roof look at the dome and the flashing course. Attic look at the tube, the elbows, and any flex section. Ceiling look at the diffuser ring. Photos help. A driveway diagnosis does not.
Ask whether the dome is still a current part. Some older kits do not have a matching lens. That pushes the job toward a full unit even if the hole in the roof is fine.
Ask whether the flashing matches this roof. Shingle in Manor is not standing-seam in Dripping Springs. A repaired dome on the wrong pan will leak in the next wind-driven rain.
A year-count for seals could not be confirmed as a published average. Sun, roof color, and the original install all matter. Read the unit. Let the independent pro say whether the part is still supported.
Do not treat a dim tube as a bigger dome by default. A dirty diffuser, a kinked flex run, or a shaded roof can all cut light. Sun tunnel versus skylight identity is worth a reread if someone is about to sell you a framed skylight for a tube problem, or the reverse.
Repair versus replace
Repair when the opening is sound, the part is available, and the failure is local. Replace when the kit is discontinued, the flashing was never right for the roof, or the tube path was a bad idea on day one. If the dome is the known failure, solar tube dome replacement is the swap. If insects keep showing up in the diffuser, bugs in a solar tube is the gap hunt.
Bugs in the tube are often a joint or a missing screen, not a reason to abandon daylighting. They are also not a leak. Name them separately when you call.
Emergency water at a framed skylight is a different object. Use emergency skylight repair for glass wells. Use this page for tubes.
City of Austin Climate Zone 2 maxima for skylights (U-factor 0.60, SHGC 0.28) are skylight numbers. Matching tube figures were not confirmed in those tables. Confirm the replacement dome on the product sheet.
