Window tinting for a skylight is not the same job as tinting a car or a west wall of house glass. The pane is overhead. The rating that Austin inspects is on the factory unit. Aftermarket film is a later layer. Bright Sky ATX is a referral service. We do not sell film. We match you with an independent pro who will name which object you actually have.
Three layers people collapse into one word
Factory coating. The low-e layer or tinted makeup that ships in the insulated glass. That is what the NFRC label is talking about. City of Austin Climate Zone 2 maxima for skylights are U-factor 0.60 and SHGC 0.28. Those figures sit in the 2024 tables. SHGC and Austin heat is that rating page. Film applied later does not rewrite the label the inspector already saw.
Aftermarket film. A sheet applied to glass after the unit is in the roof. It can cut glare in the room. It can change how the pane looks from the yard. It does not automatically become the code rating. A specific “film is legal” or “film is banned” rule for Austin skylights could not be confirmed here. Confirm with the unit maker and the building official before anyone peels an adhesive onto overhead glass.
Interior shade. Cloth or a blind on the room side of the well. That is the product family on skylight blinds and shades. Motorized shades in Bee Cave is the high-well version. A shade you can close at 3 p.m. is often the honest heat tool. It does not claim to be the glass.
A search for window tinting in Austin often means house windows. If the glare is on a wall, this page is the wrong object. If the glare is in a skylight well, stay here.
What to confirm before anyone tints the pane
Ask whether the maker lists aftermarket film as compatible. Some insulated units are built as a sealed sandwich. A film on the room-side lite is a different object than a coating inside that sandwich. A warranty statement, a void rule, or a listed film partner could not be confirmed for any unnamed model on this page. Ask the installer to show the current maker document.
Ask what you are trying to fix. Glare on a screen is a shade job more often than a film job. A room that overheats because the glass itself is old, clear, or poorly rated is a glass replacement or a full unit conversation. Film on a failed IGU does not stop fog between panes. See foggy glass between panes.
Ask about hail and UV. Overhead glass in Travis and Williamson counties takes weather a wall pane does not. The September 24, 2023 storm was the costliest Austin-area hailstorm on record, about $600 million in estimated losses across those two counties. Film does not make a pane impact-rated. Impact-resistant glass is a different spec.
Ask who will work overhead. A film crew that only does vertical house windows is not automatically a skylight crew. The well, the curb, and the flashing stay a roof job.
No dollar savings figure for film on an Austin skylight could be confirmed here. The U.S. Department of Energy heating and cooling guidance is the right frame for solar gain. ENERGY STAR skylight criteria are a product checklist, not a film spec.
How Bright Sky ATX fits
We match homeowners in Travis, Williamson, and Hays counties with independent skylight professionals. The pro you hire inspects the unit and, if the next step is glass or a shade, installs. We do not. A film layer is only in play if the maker lists it. See skylight installation.
