Impact-resistant skylight glass is a specification you ask for because Central Texas gets hail, not because Texas copies a Florida product rule onto every house. Laminated or otherwise impact-rated glazing is meant to stay in the opening when it is hit. Ordinary tempered glass can still be a code-legal pane and still spider in a storm.

A requirement that Austin, Round Rock, or Texas statewide mandate Miami-Dade style impact glazing on skylights could not be confirmed. Do not treat another state’s product rule as a local permit requirement. Ask the independent installer what the maker rates, what your insurer cares about, and what the local energy tables allow.

Thick residential skylight on an Austin roof next to hail-bruised shingles

Why this question shows up here

The September 24, 2023 Central Texas hailstorm was the costliest Austin-area hailstorm on record. NWS Austin/San Antonio and NCEI, as reported by KXAN, estimated about $600 million in losses for Travis and Williamson counties combined, about $300 million in each county. Round Rock saw hail up to about 4 inches. That is the climate fact. It is why homeowners in Pflugerville, Georgetown, Cedar Park, and north Austin ask whether the next pane should be tougher than the last one.

Hail versus the roof compares glass failure to shingle bruising. Hail and insurance covers the claim. This page is the product question: what to specify when you are already replacing glass or the whole unit.

What “impact-resistant” means on a skylight

It is a glazing construction, often laminated, tested by the maker to a published impact method. The exact test name, missile size, and rating must come from the current product sheet. Those figures stay on the sheet. If a contractor cannot point at the sheet, they are not specifying a rating. They are using a sales adjective.

Impact resistance is not the same as a low SHGC. City of Austin residential energy code uses Climate Zone 2. For skylights the published maxima are U-factor 0.60 and SHGC 0.28. You still need those energy numbers. Hail toughness does not replace them. Confirm both on the same sheet, then confirm the energy tables with the city or county for your address.

It is not a solar tube dome. Acrylic domes can be chosen with hail in mind too, but they are a different product class. See solar tube repair for existing tubes.

It is not a promise that the pane cannot break. It is a better chance that the opening stays closed when it is hit.

What to ask before you lock a unit

Ask for the maker, the model, and the impact rating in writing. Ask whether that unit also meets the Climate Zone 2 energy maxima for your lot. Ask how the flashing kit meets shingle, metal, or tile. Hail that breaks glass can also bruise the course around the curb. New glass in leftover damaged shingles is a second leak.

Ask the insurer what they need photographed and whether they care about a particular rating. Do not invent a discount. Premium effects could not be confirmed here.

Ask whether glass-only replacement can take the rated pane in this frame. Some older curbs cannot. Then you are on when glass needs replacing and repair or replace.

HOAs in west-side neighborhoods may review the look of a thicker unit or a different curb height. Ask before the order.

Permits follow the opening and the jurisdiction, not the hail adjective. Austin, ETJ, and Williamson or Hays desks differ. The contractor names the office.
