What a cover can do
Shed water past the curb if it is detailed to the roof, not ponded against the flashing. Keep people from stepping through an open pane. Buy time after hail until a matching pane or dome exists.
The September 24, 2023 Central Texas hailstorm was the costliest Austin-area hailstorm on record, about $600 million in estimated losses across Travis and Williamson counties, with hail up to about 4 inches in Round Rock. After a storm like that, glass lead times and adjuster visits stack up. A cover can be part of that wait. It does not settle the insurance path. See hail and insurance.
Manufactured exterior covers exist as maker accessories on some lines. Whether your model has one is on the sheet. A sheet of plywood and a tarp are not that accessory. Either one can still be the honest temporary move if the independent installer says the roof can take it safely.
What a cover cannot do
Fix failed flashing. A lid on a leaking pan still leaks at the course. Flashing repair is the real job.
Replace impact-rated glass. When the pane comes, ask about impact-resistant glazing.
Make a tube into a skylight. A solar-tube dome needs a dome kit, not a house-skylight lid. Dome replacement.
Stay forever. UV and wind work a temporary cover. A cover that has been up through a Central Texas summer is often a second problem.
Stay off the roof if you do not already know how to walk that roof. Tile, steep metal, and wet shingles are how a leak becomes an injury.
A cover on a Circle C tile roof and a cover on a Manor shingle roof are not the same fastening problem. The independent installer should say how it ties in, how water leaves, and when it comes off. A cover that is still up when the next hail season starts is no longer temporary.
